Creeping Juniper: Care and Growing Guide

A larger, older plant than our Size 1 Pre-Bonsai Greenmound Junipers. A great choice for a pre-bonsai plant with good size. Taller main trunk with higher branching already started. These are the same nice little Greenmound Junipers we've offered for years, but these have been trained for additional height and other desired bonsai features.

If you do not wish to enroll, choose Cancel and deselect the Paperless Statements and Letters checkbox. Nice golden colored points - good color & dense branching, make them perfect for use as privacy screening, or taller border plantings. Color & foliage density is best in full sun planting locations.

Creeping Juniper Can Tame a Steep Hill

It takes years and tons of knowledge, and even then you’ll probably struggle with low germination rates. Junipers in general have been cultivated for centuries, with records of cultivated J. It’s not exactly clear when people first started cultivating J. Horizontalis, but it has likely been a long, long time. Fortunately, there are so many junipers out there that you rarely need to worry about pollination, particularly since different species can pollinate each other.

Suspect they will first be concentrating on creating a "lounging" space in the back and just try to get planting areas in front figured out for now. The new patio in backyard will be 20' by 27' approx., centering on the window in back which is kitchen eating area inside. Don't know they've given much thought to WHAT to do in design of it. They were able to include a new patio in their financing since the existing patio, after 50 years, was slightly sinking toward the house.

Quick Reference Growing Guide

You can tie a rope around the handle and lower the mower down the steep hill. When one strip has been cut in this fashion, you haul the mower back up the slope using the rope, then repeat for the next strip. Perhaps this method is best reserved for strapping youths.

It can take up to two years for the berries to mature. Not all cultivars reliably produce berries, however. Creeping juniper does not require regular pruning. If it grows larger than you'd like, you can trim it back to fit your space, but it's best to choose varieties that are appropriately sized for your growing area whenever possible. One popular type of creeping juniper is the Juniperus horizontalis 'Blue Rug' ('Wiltonii' is similar). I agree to receive my billing statements and other legal notices electronically as available.

In addition to this tolerance for salt, creeping junipers are deer-resistant ground covers. As mentioned above, they also tend to tolerate pollution and dry soil. That's a lot of tolerance for one group of plants. Observe, too, that in this case, the ground covers are occupying flat land. Just because creeping junipers are wizards at covering steep hills, there's no rule that says you can't grow them on flat land.

The greenery serves to soften the appearance of the hardscape. Here, the structure happens to be a dry-laid stone wall. But this aesthetic concept applies equally to mortared stone walls. Introducing a whole new experience built to give you more control over your card and your time. Not everything has to be towering and substantial to make a statement in the garden. Creeping junipers can make a huge impact without ever reaching above your knees.

Before moving to the next entry, take a closer look at this planting. Apparently, the weed barrier was torn by sharp rocks or roots that the homeowner failed to remove prior to installation. Weeds, ever the opportunists, will be quick to exploit such openings. In a case like this, if the weeds aren't removed pretty soon, the whole enterprise will be put at risk. The weeds will spread quickly, causing further ruptures in the landscape fabric.

Just blast the stems and leaves with a strong spray of water once every few days and trim off any dead bits. Keep at it for a few weeks, especially in the spring and fall. All junipers are known for being downright tough. The annoying bugs and pathogens that make a meal out of so many plants seem to ignore junipers. And even if they are attacked by something, they tend to survive better. Your job is just to make sure the shrub receives some moisture whenever the top two inches of soil dry out.

Nice of your neighbor to offer to rehome the plants - plant material costs add up.. Based on the planting areas you’re showing I recommend thanking but no thanks, no suitable site. It might be revealing of problems if you knew why neighbor is pulling out. There are sooo many kinds of creeping junipers….. Although some varieties of creeping juniper can spread as much as 20 feet, the majority remain much smaller.

When it comes to beautifying your landscaping, they are superior to grass because they don't have to be mowed. Their roles in taming steep hills and in making life hard for weeds only begins to tell the story behind why creeping junipers are so popular. While male and female creeping junipers look the same in terms of foliage and growth habits, they show their difference in their flowers. The male flower is a cone-like structure with yellow-brown scales.

Horizontalis plants are dioecious, meaning the male and female parts are produced on separate plants, and in order to produce berries, you need both. For that matter, I feel like I’m still in Hosta heaven around here. Kinda tired of them but I don’t have a good mind for landscape design. Although creeping juniper is a hardy plant with few issues when grown in a suitable location, like any plant, it can have problems on occasion. If wind carries pollen from a male plant's flowers to a nearby female plant's flowers, fertilization can occur. The female flowers will then eventually produce blue-gray, small berries, each containing two or three seeds.

Forms a hardy green carpet with very rigid branching & stiff low growing foliage. Although creeping juniper is often grown as a groundcover, it cannot withstand foot traffic. Plant this spreading shrub where it won't cover walkways or be stepped on. Several issues can cause a creeping juniper to develop yellowing or browning foliage, but fungal diseases are especially common. Fungi usually take hold on plants that are receiving too much water or are in an overly shady location.

Creeping Juniper 'Golden Carpet'

Also known as Procumbens Nana, or "Pro nana" Juniper. Not only does the foliage have a distinct blue hue, but the branches grow upright with a conical shape, giving the impression of a tiny little forest of junipers. Even if you aren’t battling adverse conditions, creeping juniper is still a fantastic option simply because it’s good-looking and offers year-round color and interest.

If you are talking the TRUE ground hugging Js... They can easily cover a 6 to 8 foot circle.. Did any of the spots you show offer that kind of future potential ...

This isn't a plant that is prone to aggressive spreading or invasive behaviors. If your plant becomes too large for the space in which you are growing it, you can trim it down to the desired size. This plant should be purchased from a nursery or garden center, where you'll usually find a wide variety of species in both 1-gallon and 5-gallon planting containers. There are over one hundred cultivars from the Juniperus horizontalis species.

Also thought some wooly thyme mixed in will add color at another time of the year. Thought we might come up with some dark red plants to mix in front juniper bed to tie lava rock in...maybe heuchera? Other than the blossoms that shoot up from huechera that eventually should be cut back, the foliage is low maintenance. What's the point in growing creeping junipers? At the most practical level, these ground covers are vigorous growers that will help you suppress common lawn weeds and other unwanted plants.

Create the garden you’ve always wanted

The new patio will be a cement product...perhaps just laid in a large squares pattern. Such a large area has to have "segments"...don't know what that would be called...joints? Just enough pattern to keep it from cracking but not enough get into realm of "fancy" or expensive. Not sure what the style is now when one is doing contemporary patios. Plants in pots will have to do for time being on new back patio.

I might try one in the first picture shown, but only if you’d be willing to let it expand over the blocks onto the grass. It would look nice spiiling over the blocks, but if happy, it will likely get too big for that site.

Your Session Is About to Time Out

They do not like heavy waterlogged clay soil. I don't know exactly what your conditions are, but it's hard for me to picture hostas and junipers both doing well in the same area. Creeping juniper is popular in part because of its ability to thrive in a mix of temperatures. Part of the appeal of creeping jupiter is the fact that it's so adaptable.

The foliage is aromatic and an eye-catching blue-green hue through the spring and summer. In the winter, it often takes on a purplish tint. It's best to plant creeping juniper in the spring, although fall planting is also acceptable. The material shown in the picture is landscape fabric, not black plastic. One mistake the homeowners have made here is in failing to cover this material with mulch. Left exposed to the bright sunshine for too long, the weed barrier will suffer damage.

What Is Creeping Juniper?

You can give the plant a gentle tug to see if those roots have taken hold. If it resists, you can be confident that all is good below the soil. If you don’t already have some of this gardening kit staple in your at home, grab a one-and-a-quarter-ounce bottle at Arbico Organics.

These plants prefer dry, well-drained, sandy soil with lots and lots of sun. The fastest way to kill most junipers is to plant them somewhere with heavy, poor draining, moist soil. Foliage can range from true green to blue or even purple, and species plants produce gray-blue to dark blue cones in the wild, which we refer to commonly as juniper berries. A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates a wide range of soils including dry soils or poor soils but prefers sandy soils.

These are the older leaves and they’re typically the first to be impacted by this disease. Over time, it spreads to the upper, outer leaves. Spruce spider mites love to gnaw on junipers and spruces. We’ve struck the ‘Mother Lode’ with this brilliant, gold-colored juniper.

While it has a preference for sandy soil with light to medium moisture, it isn't particularly fussy. It will grow in poor quality, dry, compacted soils where other species won't. The only thing it asks is that the soil be well-drained. Overly wet conditions can result in root rot.
